Gotham Prize 2012

Marinella Senatore and Sissi are the winners of the second edition of the Gotham Prize, created by the Italian Cultural Institute of New York to recognize exceptional creativity in Italian art. The artists will present their winning projects in the spaces of the Italian Cultural Institute from March 8 to April 4, 2013. The exhibit is curated by Laura Barreca.

The Gotham Prize affirms the Italian Cultural Institute’s position as the promoter of young, contemporary Italian artists. The judges’ board of the Gotham Prize 2012 included the following: President Professor Riccardo Viale, Laura Barreca, Francesco Bonami, Dennis Elliott, David Freedberg, Massimiliano Gioni, and Anna Mecugni.
The winners of the first Gotham Prizes were Nicola Pecoraro and Riccardo Previdi, whose works were showcased in New York in November 2011.
The Friends of the Italian Cultural Institute of New York Foundation The Gotham Prize would not be possible without the Institute’s valued collaboration with the Friends of the Italian Cultural Institute of New York foundation. The foundation is dedicated to promoting and supporting Italian talent, excellence and many cultural achievements. The foundation organizes events and activities to support the Institute and the work of writers, musicians, filmmakers, artists, and designers, and promotes Italian art and culture throughout the United States.
Thanks to the invaluable contributions of the foundation, two art books about Marinella Senatore and Sissi, respectively, were published by NERO. These limited edition books are conceived as an integral part of the projects presented.

The Work of Marinella Senatore and Sissi
Marinella Senatore and Sissi received international recognition in recent years by way of their participation in the Venice Biennale in 2011 and 2009, respectively. The two artists, who rank among the most fascinating and prodigious personalities of the Italian art world, will present their latest projects to the American public in two personal exhibits at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York. Marinella Senatore will present her epic film trilogy, Rosas. Sissi will present the posters and drawings of Sintesi Anatomica.
