STRUCTURES – Studio Stefania Miscetti

STUDIO STEFANIA MISCETTI is proud to present the exhibition STRUCTURES, an installation consisting of 50 architectural models realized by Studio Labics between 2014 and 2015, curated by Luca Molinari.

The models were constructed from an abstract matrix whose generators can be traced back to a few simple spatial archetypes that exemplify, in a synthetic manner, some of the recurring themes in the studio’s research: the boundary between interior and exterior, between dilated and compressed space, between singular object and series, between architecture and landscape.

Taken together, the models constitute a landscape in which the relationship between structure and space is investigated in an iterative manner; a landscape in which architecture is not described or prefigured in an allusive or analog way, as in drawing, but is simulated: the models are themselves architecture. The exhibition depicts not an analysis or an exercise in form, but a pronouncement on the role of structure in architecture.

Labics is an architectural and urban planning practice led by Maria Claudia Clemente and Francesco Isidori, founded in 2002. The name of the practice – Labics – expresses the concept of a laboratory, a testing ground for advanced ideas. Theoretical research and its practical applications form an integral and important part of the practice’s work.

The research conducted at Labics is geared towards an open, relational, and structured architecture, capable of guiding the transformation of a context and of a territory through the definition of invariant principles. No matter the scale or type of intervention, the interest of the studio is oriented towards the definition of new settlement principles, experimenting with different contextual relationships and defining new social and urban geographies. Public space, intended as a place of construction and representation of an open and democratic society, always holds a central role in the research of the studio, from the more theoretical projects like Borderline Metropolis to urban master plans such as La Città del Sole (City of the Sun) or the Torrespaccata master plan in Rome and even in the more architectural projects, like MAST Bologna, Piazza Fontana in Rozzano (MI) and the Italpromo & Libardi Associates headquarters in Rome.

Labics has received numerous awards and acknowledgments in Italy and abroad. The studio has been invited to exhibit its work at many architectural exhibitions including the 11th, 12th and 13th editions of the Venice Biennale of Architecture. Projects by Labics are published in the most prestigious national and international magazines.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the book STRUCTURES will be published by NERO Publishing, including texts by Luca Molinari and Labics.
