A Strong Female Presence is Created at Le Foyer over the course of Private Conversations

Dear Nuri

I would like to invite you to speak with me at Le Foyer in the frame of my exhibition project “Mother (Working Title)” that runs from June 13 to July 5, 2015. Contrary to the otherwise public talks Le Foyer organizes I want to conduct private discussions with friends–women working and living in and around the art world. The talks will take place every day during the course of the three-weeks project in a setting created by me that is visible from the outside.

The project grew out of thinking about the strong female presence in and around the location itself: Le Foyer is located at the former Elisabeth Kaufmann gallery and it is now run by two women as well. The space is situated in Kreis 4, a neighborhood where most of Zurich’s brothels and so-called “Kontaktbars” are located. A new mother myself, the different layers and stages of being a woman have become of greater interest to me. I would like to create a space within this context for an ongoing discussion over 23 days with my female friends about being a woman (in art) today, and the notion of the mother in its broadest sense. Also: the term “material” is derived from the Latin mater (mother), and it is this matter that stands at the beginning of everything that I would like to talk about with you.

My project is also a comment on the public talks of Le Foyer that aim at a greater accessibility of artists’ works. I want to play with this ‘need’ and discuss the most personal matters in a relaxed setting in their space without instantly making them public. Through these private conversations, a strong female presence is created and circulates in the space. Of this experience I will collect material and present it in autumn in the form of a publication at Le Foyer.

What do you think? It would be really great to collaborate with you on this, and enjoy a glass of wine!
