LISTE – Art Fair Basel 2016
NERO will be participating at LISTE – Art Fair Basel 2016 where a selection of our publications will be on display and can be purchased, including brand new releases Jimmie Durham: Sound and Silliness, a book published for the exhibition by Jimmie Durham at MAXXI (5 February to 2 June 2016) as well as the unprecedented Gustav Metzger: Act or Perish! – A Retrospective, the catalogue of the first extensive overview of Gustav Metzger organized in 2015-2016 at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun and Kunsthall Oslo and Stiftelsen Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo. Other new titles include Giorgio Andreotta Calò‘s Sunset Boulevard, published in conjunction with 5122.65 Miles, the first solo exhibition of works by Italian artist Giorgio Andreotta Calò at Depart Foundation LA; and Translatio, a collaborative publication by Emily Jacir, John Lansdowne and Christopher MacEvitt, proceeding from artist Emily Jacir’s Via Crucis, the newly-completed permanent installation commissioned by artache at the church of San Raffaele in Milan.
The 21st edition of LISTE will take place from 14 through 19 June, 2016. LISTE will present a very promising selection of the most contemporary, primarily emerging art with many new discoveries and will serve again as a meeting place for important collectors, museum people and art lovers.
This year’s LISTE will present 79 galleries with artworks by over 140 artists. LISTE is widely considered to be the most important fair for a young generation of leading galleries. The 79 galleries being presented are coming from Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, Germany, Ecuador, France, Greece, Great Britain, Guatemala, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Colombia, Kosovo, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and the US.
The galleries will be showing important new positions in painting, photography, sculpture, drawing/illustration, installation, performance, video, film, and multimedia-digital art. As our jury places great value on galleries with curated presentations, most galleries will be introducing solo presentations or positions with one to three artists. A total of 34 solo presentations will be introduced this year, several of which have been mentioned above (new galleries).
Trans-Corporeal Metabolisms, the 12th edition of the Performance Project of LISTE Art Fair Basel, curated for the second time by Eva Birkenstock, Kunsthaus Bregenz, focuses on works that consider the body as a porous and permeable interface. Keren Cytter & Guests will usher in LISTE’s opening and the Performance Project on Monday, June 13, 2016, On Tuesday, Alexandra Bachzetsis will perform a new piece at the Kaserne Basel. The Project will continue with pieces by Dorota Gaweda & Eglė Kulbokaitė (Wednesday), keyon gaskin on Thursday, Haley Silverman on Friday. The Project will conclude with Alicia Frankovich will conclude the project at the Volkshaus on Saturday.
Performances – Galleries
Hugo Canoilas (*1977, PT, represented by Gallery Andreas Huber, Vienna) will show a puppet theater in the fair’s front courtyard. Jannis Varelas (*1977, GR), from The Breeder (Athens), will show a performance from his group of works entitled New Flags for a New Country. The performance refers to the revolutionary theater of the 50s and 60s in San Francisco, particularly the work of Ronnie David and the San Francisco Mime Troup.
The Helvetia Art Prize will be awarded for the 13th time. This highly coveted promotional prize is awarded to a graduate of a Swiss art school majoring in visual and media art. The recipient of this year’s prize, which includes a monetary award of CHF 15,000 and a solo presentation at LISTE, is Stella, Zurich.
Kunsthalle Zurich will be present at the print workshop of LISTE with its Ratz Fatz Zauber Was – Fairs and Fairy Tales, a project by Luca Beeler, Cedric Eisenring, and Carmen Tobler. The project presents a collection of children’s books from the post-war period whose eagerness to experiment exemplified it their richness and visually graphic and media reached its highpoint in the 1970s.
The HeK – House of Electronic Arts Basel is dedicated to digital culture and new art forms of the information age. Invited guests include the Swiss artist duo Christoph Wachter & Mathias Jud with Capital of The World. In their interventions, both Swiss artists question how digital communication tools become encoded in our personal range of expressions and influence our perception.
The exhibition space Kaskadenkondensator, Basel, will show the local artist-curator collective Dr. Kuckucks Labrador. The collective will develop a shop and exhibition system with changing displays. An easily accessible shop area with a broad variety of works will serve as a source for exhibits that are continually developing. Artists from the surrounding region will be shown.
