On January 26th, 2018 the third edition of the seminar ELEMENTARE will take place at the Triennale Teatro dell’Arte, in Milan. ELEMENTARE is a cycle of roaming seminars on contemporary performance curation. After the seminars with Frie Leysen and Kasia Tórz, the German curator and dramaturg Florian Malzacher investigates the notion of performativity by applying it to curating in the performing arts, revealing its unexplored potentialities. Following J. L. Austin, Judith Butler, and others in their belief in the performative capacity to transform reality with words and other cultural utterances, but also emphasising the often dismissed, colloquial notion of the performative as something being ‘theatre-like’, the seminar looks at how those two strands are in fact interdependent and intertwined. How can ‘theatre-like’ strategies and techniques in fact enable ‘reality making’ situations in art, and how, as a consequence, can curating itself becomes staged, dramatised, choreographed, and composed?

ELEMENTARE is a program involving research, analysis and encounters, conceived and promoted by the Ubu per Franco Quadri Association and dedicated to practices in curating in the performing arts: theatre, dance, performance, opera. The seminars—hosted by various Italian institutions promoting performance and contemporary arts—invite artists, operators, students, critics and spectators who are interested in meeting international curators, while the latter turn their own actions into a critical space, focusing on the relational and experience-based nature of the performing arts. At the centre of their interests lies a wide range of issues that revolve around the representation of spaces and the spaces of representation, bodily proxemics and the modes of perception, pragmatic urgencies and the activation of transversal imaginative tactics. The attention goes to the flow of intuition and the unexpected humanity that define this way of acting, as though to set out a horizon of resistance to contrast the current institutional drain in cultural work, reaching the elementary and political lymph of erratic experiences.

The ELEMENTARE seminar with Florian Malzacher is curated by The Ubu per Franco Quadri Association, in collaboration with TRIENNALE Teatro dell’Arte, and with Fondazione Alberto e Arnoldo Mondadori, Olinda, Ubulibri.

Florian Malzacher is a curator, dramaturge and writer. From 2013–2017 he was artistic director of the Impulse Theater Festival (Cologne/Düsseldorf/Mülheim a.d. Ruhr, Germany) and from 2006–2012 co-programmer of the interdisciplinary festival steirischer herbst (Graz, Austria). He has (co-)curated e.g. the marathon-camp Truth is Concrete on art and activism (2012), the performative conference Appropriations (Ethnological Museum Berlin, 2014) and the congress Artist Organisations International (HAU Berlin, 2015). He is (co-)editor of books on the theatre companies Forced Entertainment and Rimini Protokoll, on art and politics, and on curating performing arts. His latest publications include Not Just a Mirror. Looking for the Political Theatre of Today (2015), and Empty Stages, Crowded Flats. Performativity as Curatorial Strategy (2017).

The Ubu per Franco Quadri Association is committed to the challenges involved in protecting and recognising the full value of Franco Quadri’s cultural work, and to bringing this collective cultural history into focus in light of our own times, the Association dedicated to this outstanding theatre critic and editor encourages a thorny, unsettling and playful criticism, so as to cultivate an active gaze and a gesture of civic reawakening. From the Ubu Prizes to the numerous Ubulibri publications – including the Patalogo, a glorious almanac of theatre that brought together unpublished materials, rapid theoretical surveys, tensions, breakdowns and successes in the international scene’s evolution from 1979 to 2010—the Association works to give continuity to this material and transform it, attempting to identify the past and present foundations of this innovative and fearless critical undertaking, which has permanently changed our way of looking at and speaking of the stage. The Franco Quadri and Ubulibri Archive is kept at the Mondadori Foundation.
