Invernomuto “Black Med” at Teatro Garibaldi, Palermo

Invernomuto, Black Med, 2018

Black Med is a platform conceived and developed by Invernomuto for Manifesta 12 centered around the idea of the Black Mediterranean. A series of talks and listening sessions curated by the duo will take place in Palermo throughout the extent of the biennale, and install in its three Public Programme segments.

In addition, will host video loops and mixes commissioned to musicians, scholars and visual artists alternating every two weeks, rendering the core idea of the Black Mediterranean in sonic form.

The Mediterranean sea, once understood as a fluid entity aiding the formation of networks and exchange, is now the scenario of a humanitarian crisis and heated geopolitical dispute. For scholar Alessandra Di Maio, who is engaged in an ongoing research on the area and from whom the term Black Mediterranean is borrowed, any discussion around the Mediterranean is to be framed in the understanding of the influence Africa had on the formation and development of Europe in terms of exchange of goods, ideas, tales, and people – intellectuals as much as slaves.

Black Med finally aims at intercepting the trajectories that sounds trace passing through this protean area, as migration routes leave sonic trails that, in the words of Iain Chambers, “resist representation, and propose an affective economy [that is] intrinsically diasporic.”

Black Med’s first appointment, taking place in the exquisite setting of Teatro Garibaldi (headquarter of Manifesta 12) will feature a conversation between Alessandra Di Maio, Ph.D (University of Palermo) and Iain Chambers, Ph.D (University of Naples “L’Orientale”) around these subjects, and will be followed by the first listening session led by the artists.
