The works inside Orbita are born from the observation of matter. The movement of the eye that scans the surface of materials, exploring their potential, is the primary gesture of Borgonovo’s sculptural practice.

The artist is interested in a series of bare minimum gestures, using marks and traces already present on the raw materials as a point of departure. Lifting, splitting, doubling, joining become empirical operations, which mark a point of contact between mind and matter.

For the artist the knowledge of a body is always mediated by another body: in a specular way, Orbita has been thought as an organism of which every work is another fundamental part.

In the work Landscape, two halves of a single sheet of onyx show the same material before and after being polished. It’s the fragment of a landscape seen from above, a natural bas-relief, the detail of a skin enlarged and observed closely.  Stone is the aluminium cast of the inner space of a lava rock, the space carved out by the escaping gases.

Lungs is composed of two almost identical bronze sculptures, each created by jointing the casts of half heads. Presented upside down, they look like two containers marking the boundary of air.
