Forest Theater is the catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name (8 October – 30 November 2014) by Grear Patterson at the American Academy in Rome. It is a wide format book which collects snapshots with a melancholy aspect and invoke personal memory of places and events. These photographs explore the sense of nostalgia and of lost innocence in the transition from childhood to adulthood.
Like the exhibition, the book summons formative moments in the artist’s life, rites of passages tapping into a collective, rather than simply a personal consciousness. Yet whilst the exhibition consisted of various media – sculptures, videos, photographs and objects collected by the artist during his childhood, which act as sort of “Proustian madeleines,” the book functions as compendium of images or psuedo-album, including moments that evoke what may be conceived as a typical American childhood and the turbulent passages of adolescence.
The exhibition at the American Academy in Rome was curated by Peter Benson Miller.
The exhibition and the catalogue are a collaboration between Depart Foundation and the American Academy in Rome.
