The Crisis of Post-Spectacle "Live" Contemporary Ambient Performance (Or… Why I Can't Get Paid to DJ A-Structural Audio)
The Crisis of Post-Spectacle “Live” Contemporary Ambient Performance (Or… Why I Can’t Get Paid to DJ A-Structural Audio) is a limited edition book in Italian and English featuring an essay written by Terre Thaemiltz on ambient musical performance. Other than being one of the most interesting contemporary artist-performers working between music and the visual arts, he is the author of a critical text of rare lucidity.
Written in 1997 while Thaemiltz was living in New York for an unrealized publication by the former Berlin-based Mille Plateaux label, The Crisis of Post-Spectacle “Live” Contemporary Ambient Performance (Or… Why I Can’t Get Paid to DJ A-Structural Audio) is reintroduced here by NERO. Whilst some of the technical and musical terms employed in the essay may now seem dated, the complex and indeed problematic intersection of economics, performance and production is still pertinent today. Not only does Thaemiltz provide us with insight into the dynamics of the commercial and audio-market place, but it also provokes a reflection upon the evolution of “contemporary ambient performances.”
